My Iranian friend tells me that almost everyone in Iran has had a nose job including her sister-in-law and a few friends, who all live in Iran.

I myself am from Pakistan and was browsing through a few Pakistani fashion magazines and almost every other page was an ad for cosmetic surgery. I thought the locations were elsewhere but they were in Pakistan.
Apparently its a very large fad over there.

But I was under the impression that plastic surgery/cosmetic surgery was forbidden under Islam (unless for medical purposes).

Is it not forbidden?
What do you make of this?

Oh I looked it up and found this site that said it was wrong for beautification purposes:

It is haraam. I have been to India, and some of my relatives are in Pakistan, so i do know what you are talking about. All of my aunts get facials and get their eyebrows waxed when my mother, living in America, does not do all of this.

Honestly, it may be popular, but it's wrong. Cosmetic/Plastic surgery is changing the way Allah tala made you, altering his creation. It is strictly forbidden.

EDIT // The government doesn't shut these facilities down simply because they are making money.

EDIT again : lol, well, basically they do more fashion than we do. People would think that living in America, we have lost Islam, and have become all western. But that's not the cast. Although none of the women in my family have gotten plastic surgery or implants (eww), putting pounds of makeup on your face and putting layers of nail polish isn't much better.

EDIT x3 : Well, it depends. I don't think you could go out selling it in the open, but hey, they do sell it. It's not that common in comparison to beauty and fashion, but you could probably sell it for a little while.. before you got busted of course. They are more serious on certain issues.

i'm a muslim and i wouldn't get plastic surgery. don't judge the religion because of what the individuals choose to do. plastic surgery is forbidden in islam. why people who call themselves "followers" do the complete opposite i don't know.

salam alikom sis

no sis,the government can not shut it down because it's not illegal nor haram to be a plastic surgeon...and dnt forget there are times where plastic surgery is needed like in burn cases or obvious deforming or post-surgery scars..etc.

it is forbidden for doing it for no necessary..but as anything else that Muslims choose to ignore and satisfy their desires....

may Allah guide us all

edit:

abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

Allah had cursed those women who tattoo and who have themselves tattooed, those who pluck hair from their faces and those who make spaces between their teeth for beautification, (changing what Allah has created).

plastic surgery if it wasn't to cure a damage it is ''changing what Allah has created''

I am not sure if it is forbidden or not...I know my hubby's younger sister just did her nose & she is 17 & Moroccan muslim... So I dont think it's a huge "sin" to do something about your appearence if it really bothers you why not?

I can answer the other question though... Iranians are ethnically inclined toward big noses.. big noses are perceived as a flaw on women in alot of people's eyes.

The countries you named are not Islamic...actually not one exists today though KSA is the closest to being one. There are countries that are majority Muslim but they for the most part are not run by Islamic law.

Iran is shia and I don't know their ruling on plastic surgery.

Also, most countries that are majority Muslim still sell alcohol and pork. :-(

Homosexuality is forbidden in islam, but you see many foolish people in islamic nations doing it.

So...just because some muslims do it, doesnt make it halal. (and we dont trust anything shias do, especially since one of their deceased leaders allowed bestiality and infant sex)

but I think your friend overexxagarated on the amount of people who do such things, because only the rich can afford that, and the average iranian has nowhere near the means to get a nose job...

cuz "muslim" nations are no longer "Islamic" .

and btw,if u think Iran is a muslim country,,u really need to refer to books written by ex-shia`s to know the truth.

they`re even "official" hypocrites with their "taqiya" religion.

Muslims hide nothing of their beliefs as Shia do.

Unless there is a medical reason to have it done, yes it is forbidden.

No, I don't think plastic surgery is haram, but if you have surgery to beautify your face, you have to cover your face when you are in the presence of non-mehrams.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

May Allah help us all keep firm on the Straight Path, Ameen!

Islam denounces excess in beautifying oneself to the extent of altering one's physical features as Allah created them. The Qur'an considers such alterations as inspired by Satan, who “ ...will command them (his devotees) to change what Allah has created...” (An-Nisa’: 119)

Dealing with the question in point, the eminent Muslim scholar, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, states:

“Surgeries for beautification are in vogue today as the result of the materialistic pattern of Western civilization, whose main focus is the body and its desires. Men and women spend hundreds and thousands of dollars to reshape their noses or breasts, or whatever they consider defective. This behavior most certainly belongs to the category of excessive beautification, unnecessarily changing what Allah has created, and it makes one subject to the curse of Allah and His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Likewise, it involves torture, pain, and waste of money merely for the sake of one's appearance, in addition to its being an expression of an individual's preoccupation with form rather than substance, with body rather than soul.

It may happen that a person has an unusual physical defect, which attracts the attention of others to the point of inflicting on him physical and psychological pain every time he meets people. In this case, he may treat the defect and thus alleviate the embarrassment that makes his life miserable. Allah, the Most Merciful, has imposed no hardship on us in religion.... (Al-Bahi Al-Khuli, Al-Mar'ah bayna Al-Bayt wal-Mujtama`, 2nd edition, p. 105.)

This statement may be supported by the Hadith concerning widening the gap between the teeth for the sake of beautification, for what is disapproved here is doing this merely for the sake of artificial beauty. However, if it is needed to eliminate pain or distress, there is nothing wrong in doing it."

In this context, the eminent Muslim scholar, Dr. `Abdel-Fattah Idrees, Professor of Comparative Jurisprudence at Al-Azhar Univ., states:

"There is nothing wrong with plastic surgery if it is used to treat a deformed organ where the operation will offer a better quality of life. However, such surgery is not permissible if it is used for the mere purpose of beautification and altering the creation of Allah.

The previous view does not in any way dissuade a person from showing interest in his outward appearance and beauty. Ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to have an interest in his appearance and adornment. And he also urged his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) to follow suit."

Shedding more light on this issue Sheikh `Atiyyah Saqr, former head of Al-Azhar Fatwa Committee, states the following:

"Beautification which is used to reshape a deformed part of the body is generally recommended in Islam, as long as it is used for a valid reason.

As far as plastic surgery in Islam is concerned, we can say that there are two main kinds of plastic surgery, and they are as follows:

The first kind of plastic surgery is used for medical treatment, mainly to alleviate the suffering of the person. For example, there is nothing wrong with the use of plastic surgery in skin grafting, suturing a hollow wound and bone-setting. This kind of beautification is permissible. It is a form of co-operation in what is good and preventing harm that a person may face due to a deformity in his physical and outward appearance.

The second kind is cosmetic surgery that is normally used to change the Creation of Allah in an attempt to look more beautiful such as breast enlargement or reduction, face-lifts, spacing between teeth (just for beautification), reducing the size of lips and nose. This kind of surgery is not permitted in Islam because they alter the Creation of Allah. Allah Almighty says: "And surely I will lead them astray, and surely I will arouse desires in them, and surely I will command them and they will cut the cattle's ears, and surely I will command them and they will change Allah's creation. Whoso chooseth Satan for a patron instead of Allah is verily a loser and his loss is manifest." (An-Nisaa': 119)

Plastic surgery has advanced at a rapid rate in an attempt to reduce people's suffering. Unfortunately, some forms of surgery are used for luxurious purposes and not for a sound reason. Islam, however, welcomes the use of plastic surgery as long as it is done in people's favor. In certain cases, it is a necessity to remove an unwanted tooth or finger that might appear in a person's body.”

Allah Almighty knows best.
