Question:
I drank water after Sehri time, does this break my fast?

I can't eat Sehri anymore due to the little time difference between the Iftar and Sehri meals. I literally cannot consume food, go to sleep (I have to sleep pretty quickly after as I have work early mornings) then get up and eat again. So I mostly say my prayer for fasting at around midnight with a drink of water. But what happened today is that I woke up thirsty at around 4am and drank some water. I didn't see the light coming in and I thought the time was 2am-ish.

I feel so bad and deeply regret not bothering to check the time. Did this act of carelessness break my fast?

If it wasn't your intention to purposely drink water after Sehri, then inshAllah you should be fine. Action is by Intention in Islam, so as long as it wasn't your intention to break your fast, then your fast should still be valid. Just keep more careful next time and keep fasting until it's time to break it.

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet said: “Whoever forgets he is fasting, and eats or drinks is to complete his fast, as it was Allah who fed him and gave him something to drink.” (Related by the group.)

Commenting on it, At-Tirmidhi says: “Most of the scholars act according to this Hadith. It is the opinion of Sufyan Ath-Thauri, Ash-Shafi’i, Ahmad, and Ishaq.”

Abu Hanifah reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever breaks his fast during Ramadan due to forgetfulness is not to make up the day later or to perform any expiation.” (Related by Ad-Daraqutni, Al-Baihaqi, and Al-Hakim, who says that it is Authentic according to Muslim's criterion.)

Ibn `Abbas reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Allah will not hold anyone of this nation responsible for what is done in error, forgetfulness or under coercion.” (Related by Ibn Majah, At-Tabarani, and Al-Hakim.)

Well you should say the dua again if it wasn't past sehri and only Lord knows better so ask for forgiveness from him.

I Disagree with above

Now I could see the sun going down and think "yeah looks like maghrib" and eat my dinner. This is haram and lazy and INTENTIONAL because it's done due to laziness.

If you were saying I have no clock then that would be another story.

I believe you've broken your fast because you didn't bother to check.

I think you're fine because you're in that fuzzy mental state .
