I have two questions regarding the 'Uleema:

1) Are the Imaams of Masjid al-Haraam and Masjid an-Nabaawi such as Sudais, Juhaany, Budair etc. all scholars?

2) Is there any difference between a Sheikh and an 'Alim? Are they both considered scholars?

Thank You,
Peace

1. Yes , all of them are scholars.

2. In Islamic usage Shaykh means a "learned person in Islaam" or an "Islamic scholar". `Aleem ( plural Ulemaa) is an synonym of Shaykh.

As for my Information even though they are capable of Issuing Fatwa , they are not allowed to do so. only the members of Fatwa commity /council can Issue Fatwa.

but they can preach and do all other business of a Scholar like criticizing the opinions , weigh up the opinions , determine which is more correct etc ...

JazakAllah Khair! I listened to one of Sheikh Sudais' (beautiful voice) recording in Makkah, on YouTube a long time ago, and I've been looking around for months to jog my memory of WHO recited it.

And, this question just jogged my memory.

To answer your question:

1. Most of these Imaams conduct prayers, and have memorized the Qur'an from page-to-page, and are qualified to give fatwas and lectures, so I assume they are scholars in some way or the other.

2. To become an 'Alim/'Aalimah you have to undergo an extensive period of course work, and studying every part of Islam in detail, and there is a title towards being an 'Alim (the title is basically earned through an institution). Being a Sheikh just basically requires any person to remain diligent in pursuing knowledge on Islam based on the Qur'an and Hadiths.

1.) I would assume so since they are of those ones who have profound knowledge of a particular subject.

2.) There literally the same in the main sense, an alim is a learned person on a particular subject while a shiekh A Man over 40 years old generally, Even a new Muslim can be called a Sheikh if he is diligent in seeking the knowledge of Islam based upon Quran and authentic Sunnah. He is a Sheikh to those he can teach.

EDIT:

-Raw- no they cant issue Fatwa, at least i dont think so, they're just learned people, they can tell you what's right and whats wrong, but not issue a legal verdict.

they must be , i m not sure through reliable sources. but an imam must be too knowledgeable. i guess all won't be. there will be different scholars & others with different levels & titles.

i think sheikh is only for a religious person of arabia but aalim is scholar . so sheikh can be. as both can be.

fatwas are given by those high level scholars who have title of being

" MUFTI ".

fatwas are not given by any other scholar other than mufti.

1) Yes, they indeed are scholats and most of them are PHD in Islamic knowledge.

2) Shaikh and Alim are titles of respect and there is specific rule to apply these titles to any body. So, just by reading or hearing these titles you can't confirm that how authentic they are.

They were given a different task..

One is for teaching..

Another one is for punishing..

that is only my thinking..

there is nothing to do with Hadis & Al'Quran..

But Maybe there is Something Smiler there..

Just check it out your self..
