I need some advice. Im in college and I been looking for my major for a while. So far I've gotten no where. I suck at math and in class im shy. I talked to a adviser today and she said college isnt for everybody.

I just dont know what to do. Im shy and dumb which is the worst combination for a person. I talked to many advisers and have gotten nowhere. I just have no motivation I guess. Theirs this job opening for a UPS package handler I think im going to take it because I cant find a better option.

Im just asking in this section because Im muslim but im inconsistent in Islam and I think I deserve whats coming to me. I been spoiled and I think thats why im not motivated or hard working.

I think if I become a better Muslim, Allah(swt) will guide me to success inshallah.

any advice?

salam and thanks

We alekumuselam,

It is rubbish what your advise said. It is for all unless they are spoils, like you , maybe. What I mean here is, look at the Jews? have you seen any one of them in store room "Packaging"? Selling milk? even buying some thing in your grocery?

Think about it.

WHY DU'AS NOT ANSWERed

There are various reasons due to which Du'as, supplications and invocations are not accepted.

Allah rejects supplications if the worshipper is hasty or does not have patience.

It was asked, "O Messenger of God?...What does it mean to be hasty?" Prophet Muhammad responded "A worshipper says, 'I have prayed and prayed , and I don't yet see that it will be accepted; so he gives up hope of being answered, and leaves du'a'.

(Hadith narrated by Muslim from Abu Hurayrah, as mentioned in sahih al-Jami #7705)

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (Radiallhu Anhu) that the Messenger of Allah said: “(The Dua) of any one of you will be answered so long as he is not hasty in seeking a response and does not say, ‘I prayed but I have not had a response.’” [Narrated by al-Bukhari, 5981; Muslim, 2735] [15][16]

“A person’s Dua will continue to be answered so long as he does not pray for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties.” Narrated by Muslim.[15]

Change oneself first

This aspect is explained in the following verse:

"Verily, Allah will not change the (good) conditions of a people as long as they do not change their state (of goodness) themselves (by committing sins and by being ungrateful and disobedient to Allah)”

— Qur'an, sura 13 (Ra'ad), ayat 11 [17]

Praising God

One reported Hadith relates as follows,

Once a man said, "O God, forgive me and have mercy and have mercy on me!" This was after the man had finished two raka'ats. Prophet Muhammad said, "You have been hasty, O worshipper! When you finish your prayer, then sit down and praise God with the praise that he is worthy of, and pray upon me, then state your du'a..." [1)

If worshipper thinks Dua will not be answered

Muhammad is reported to have said, "Make du'a to God in a state that you are certain that your du'a will be responded to, and know that God does not respond to a du'a that originates from a negligent, inattentive heart"( Hadith narrated by al-Tirmidhi and al-Hakim from Abu-Hurayrah and authenticated by al-Albani in sahih al-Jami ) [16]

Not thinking positively of Allah may have invocations unanswered. Muhammad said: “Allah, may He be exalted, says: ‘I am as My slave thinks I am.’” [Narrated by al-Bukhari, 7405; Muslim, 4675] [15]

Sinful or Haram Income and food

Muhammad made mention of a person who travels widely, his hair dishevelled, and covered with dust. “He lifts his hands and makes supplication, ‘O Lord, O Lord,’ but his diet is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and his clothes are unlawful, and his nourishment is unlawful. How then can his supplication be accepted?” [19] (Similar version in Hadith reported by Ahmad, Muslim, and al-Tirmidhi from Abu Hurayrah, as mentioned in sahih al-Jami #2744) “A person’s Dua will continue to be answered so long as he does not pray for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties.” Narrated by Muslim.[15]

Asking for something sinful

Abu Hurayrah (R.A) said that The Messenger of Allah said: “A person’s Dua will continue to be answered so long as he does not pray for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties.” Narrated by Muslim [2]

A dua for something that is haram cannot be made and will not be fulfilled. We cannot ask for that which is forbidden in Islam. Such duas would definitely not be answered. Hence for starters we should know that what we are asking for should be halal according to the Islamic Shariah. No one should pray for death. [3]

Cutting of the ties of kinship

“A person’s Dua will continue to be answered so long as he does not pray for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties.” Narrated by Muslim.[15]

Muhammad said: “The supplication of a slave continues to be granted as long as he does not supplicate for a sinful thing or for something that would cut off the ties of kinship and he does not grow impatient.”[citation needed] [19]

Making Dua conditional

The Prophet said: “Let not any one of you say, ‘O Allah, forgive me if You will, O Allah, have mercy on me if You will.’ Let him be resolute in the matter, whilst knowing that no one can compel Allah to do anything.” [Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim] [4]

This is my advice: stick with it no matter what. NO. MATTER. WHAT.

A brain is a terrible thing to waste, and I believe that wholeheartedly, with everything I've got. I refuse to let this brain go to waste.

SO MANY TIMES I have felt like I was hopelessly stupid, when I would see other people do well in classes that I'd do bad in. But the truth is that its not that college isn't for everyone, its the fact that college is so different and a person has to spend time getting the hang of it before they start becoming successful. So there really isn't anything you cannot do with hard work.

I was a lazy student in high school, what I thought was hard work was far from it. So when I got to college (I'm starting 4th year now) I spent about a year failing classes. Eventually though, when I got frustrated enough with myself and when I got so sick of failing, I studied like there was nothing else in life, I even forgot my own self. When I learned the meaning of hard work, I didn't feel like it was impossible for me anymore.

and for the record, Im not completely stupid for having to study that much...anyone who's pre-med will tell you that thats how it goes. lol.

So I can't even express to you how much I can relate right now. But please, don't give up.

And I would like to add that if you find yourself making excuses to not study harder, or that you feel a lack of motivation, and if you spend more time beating yourself up about his than you do not...then I suggest you talk to a doctor. It might be depression, and once you get treatment for that you will feel an immense weight lifted off of you. Thats how I felt when it happened to me.

Also, Islam doesnt even work that way. If it did, all the bad people on earth would also be the most unsuccessful. And thats not the case. Read Surah 2, verse 200-202. School success is a worldly sort of success, so to gain worldly success shouldn't be the reason you start practicing Islam more.

May Allah (swt) give you success both in this life, and the hereafter. Ameen. :)
