Arabic is one of the hardest languages to speak. To read and write it you need someone to teach you, because its not that simple. As far as learning how to speak it, you can get her an online software to help with sounds and pronounciations. This will take time because there are about 26 different dialects in this language so even some fluent speakers wont understand others from different parts of the middle east....

Go buy some books, or online thats the best way, or just start hanging around arabic speakers :) Good Luck

The spoken and written arabic are very different. You will have to study Morder Standar Arabic to be able to read and write arabic, and then choose a country to learn the way they speak arabic. You can talk to people in MSA, they will understand you but you will not understand them, and you will sound wierd. The arabic spoken in North Africa (excluding Egypt) is very different from the one spoken in Middle East. The one spoken in Middle East is the purest, but the one spoken in Egypt is the more extended because of the movie industry. The one spoken in North Africa, including Moroco, is mixed with other languages, like French.

I am learning coloquial arabic spoken in Damascus, Syria. A very useful book you can download for free is available on http://www.syrianarabic.com This is only for coloquial arabic.

They are not good books for MSA in all levels. I am using "Mastering Arabic" which I think is pretty good for begginers and bring a CD. (Don't get "Teach yourself Arabic by JR Smart. The texts are very obsolete). I am aware that when I get to intermediate level I am not going to find a good book, but I am going to have to get the grammar from different places on the internet. I also have the help of my husband who is from Damascus.

Really, the book available on syrianarabic.com is very good.

Like others said, probably moving to a Arab country. Or learning from books/online.

Also making some new good Muslim/Arab friends can be a boost.

Going to an Arabic-speaking country, but that could be expensive...

I think it would be a good idea to consider studying the Arabic language when you have the ability. Some programs I recommend are...

(In the USA): "Markazul-Bayaan: Center for Arabic and Islamic Studies

Located in Philadelphia, PA USA

website: http://www.mbarabiccenter.com

(this institute also has an online/distance-education program)

(In Egypt): Al-Ibaanah Arabic Institute

Located in Cairo, Egypt

website: http://www.ibaanah.com

Note, this institute has accelerated summer programs if you are able to spend a summer in Egypt: See "Accelerated Programs" at the link: http://www.ibaanah.com/en/offered.htm

If you want to learn Mandarin but you have no clue where to commence then a program for Mandarin is the best on-line program for the newcomers since it actually commences with the basis.

go to a mosque and ask a qari to teach you. you would start with a basic qaeeda that that's about the alphabets and how to pronounce them and how you string up two alphabets and all. it's easy to learn to read arabic. i know how to read but i don't know how to translate
